Pharmacokinetics is the study of the time course of the drug concentration in the body, i.e., what the body does to the drug. Pharmacokinetics involves the processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination (ADME). Pharmacokinetics is often studied in conjunction with pharmacodynamics, i.e., what the drug does to the body.

Contents

Absorption

Absorption is the process by which unchanged drug proceeds from site of administration to site of measurement within the body.

Distribution

Distribution refers to the reversible transfer of drug from one location to another within the body.

Metabolism

Metabolism is the irreversible transformation of one chemical species (parent compound) into another (metabolite).

Excretion

Excretion is the irreversible removal of unchanged drug.
